Top 5 of 2014

As 2014 comes to an end, it seems only right to take a moment and reflect on the amazing things that God has done this year. So, without further adue… (insert drum roll here)

The Owens Top 5 of 2014

(in no particular order)

1.Vencedor Boys Academy – Year 1

With over 40 boys coming through the doors of our small rent house every week, we finished our very first year at the Vencedor Boys Academy! Each day young boys were greeted with a warm healthy meal as they learned about the true love of their heavenly Father. Along with learning English and receiving homework help, the boys studied about men like King David and Paul. Though they made mistakes, they sought after God with their hearts and dedicated their lives to serving him. That's the exact same prayer we have for each of the boys. What was just an idea for the Boys Academy in 2013, is now a beautiful reality!

2. Sustainable Income for Single Moms

Tears come to my eyes as I think about the ways God has blessed and provided job opportunities for single moms in El Rosario. This year alone, God has provided 3 different jobs, employing 9 different single mothers in El Rosario. That’s 9 moms who have the ability to feed their children. 9 moms filled with dignity and pride at the work of their hands. 9 moms who rest at night knowing how valuable they are and that they and their children will be taken care of. Thank you God for providing opportunities through PJ’s Finesse Baits, OneLoom, and the Guatemalan Scarf Project!

3. Future Boys Academy Building Project

Construction of the wall around our property in El Rosario

At the beginning of 2014, Vencedor Ministries purchased land in El Rosario! God provided a beautiful piece of land right on the outskirts of the village and only a 5 minute walk from the public school. After our fundraising campaign in 2013, we were able to pay for the land, build a security wall, and prepare the water systems for the future buildings. The land is a beautiful symbol of our growing ministry! We know that one day soon, that land will be filled with the sounds of learning, laughter, and of course soccer as God provides the funds to construct the building for the Boys Academy!

4. One-on-One Discipleship Opportunities

If you know us, you know that David and I’s passion is discipleship. One-on-one, intentional, long-term discipleship. This year, God placed people in both David and I's life to walk along side them and “teach them everything I have commanded you.” (Matt 28) The beautiful growth and life change that we were able to be a part of is indescribable. Alfred and his desire for knowing God’s word and how he relates life to the story of Abraham every chance he gets. Wendy and her passion to share God’s truth both at school and at home. Eriberto and his slow but steady progress in understanding the essential promises of God’s word. Mara and her tangible, Christ-like love for others. It has been amazing to be a part of each of their lives as the Holy Spirit works to transform them more and more into the image of Christ.

5. New Life in Christ

Truly the most amazing thing I have witnessed, is the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. This year, we have the privilege of witnessing 3 young friends commit their life to Christ. Both Wendy and Ruth were baptized into a new life in Christ earlier this year. Yoxwan, one of the boys David has discipled for the last year, made a commitment to confess Jesus as his Lord and Savior and was baptized just this morning!

With so many amazing things going on in El Rosario, it was hard to pick only 5! Thank YOU for being a part of all that God is doing here in Guatemala! Without your prayer and support, none of this would be possible. Here’s to another year, full of joy, growth, and Jesus… Happy 2015!

“In that day you will say: 'Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted.'” (Isaiah 12:4)
