Salvation and Baptism

Brandon, one of my 6th grade Vencedor Boys, hasn’t always been the most attentive or well behaved in the bunch. Boys will be boys, despite their location on a map, but Brandon has always been a little rowdier than the rest. This week in class, we studied 1 Corinthians where Paul tells the Corinthians to follow his example, to do the very things that he does. He finishes strong with a bold statement, “Imitate me, as I imitate Christ.” I encouraged the boys to do that with me, “do as I do”, like Paul said.

“…I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved. Imitate me, as I imitate Christ.” -1 Corinthians 10:33-11:1

This is Brandon, 3 years ago, from when I first met him. He has grown up so much since this day. I’m excited to see how God continues to work in his life as he grows up to be a man of God!

I noticed Brandon was listening very intently as I taught, leaning in, ignoring distractions from the other boys. After class, Brandon asked if we could talk outside. “Would you have helped Jesus carry His cross?”, he said. “It’s all I can think about lately. Would I have helped Him if I saw Him hurting like that?”

As I listened to Brandon continue on with other questions, I thought to myself, “Is this really Brandon? I don’t even recognize this kid!” I saw the beginnings of a new creation. I praise Jesus for that moment, for reaching down from heaven and knocking on this hard little boy’s heart. I praise Him for the opportunity to walk alongside Brandon and for the confidence Brandon has in me to ask me about the tough stuff.

Brandon and I talked after class that day for about another hour, and I’ve been praying that the Lord will give him the desire to make it a weekly thing. The Lord, our God…IS GOD! He’s the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations!!! (Deut 7:9) Praise our great God with us, and pray with us that Brandon’s heart will be softened to the new things the Lord is revealing to him.

Pray for Brandon. Pray that God will continue to knock on the doors of his heart and that he will say “Yes!” to Jesus.

*****UPDATE: 1 Month Later*****

Sometimes, Sundays come around and we’re not sure what to write about. Other times, we get a phone call at 11pm on a Saturday night after we’re already in bed, and just like that we have something very big to share!

“David, I’m sorry to call so late…but can you come to my baptism tomorrow morning?”

Brandon. We’ve talked about him a lot lately. He’s studied with me for 2 and a half years, I’ve been discipling him one-on-one for about two months, and he recently shared the gospel for the first time. And as of this morning, Brandon made a public confession of his faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized!

“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” -Acts 19:5

The Lord has been showing us so much fruit over these last few months. We can see Him changing the lives of the people we know and love! This is what Brandon said to me this morning about his decision:

“I’ve been thinking about it, and last night I realized that I couldn’t wait! I thought about everything God has done and has shown me, and all of the sudden…it was easy!”

Praise Jesus! Praise him for choosing us and not the other way around ( John 15:16), praise Him for being the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). Praise Him for Brandon’s salvation and life change!

Praise for Brandon’s decision! Pray for continued growth as he begins his new life as a disciple of Jesus!

    David….
God put you in the path of this young man at this time in your life and you lived to see the blossom bloom. So proud of you for disciplining this young boy and being in his life when he needed you most.

Sometimes the blossom bloom long after we have moved on in life, we plant the seed, but sometimes it takes years or decades to bloom. This seed was nurtured and tended to daily and bloomed fast!!!

    Praise God!
